Recycling firms have been boosted by the news that a financial support plan for the industry has been approved by the EU.

The government's Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) is planning a four-year, £50 million extension to its current scheme, which provides financial assistance to companies operating in the recycling sector.

Waste Management World notes that this is the first time that the EU Commission has given approval to an aid scheme under its recently revised Environmental Guidelines.

WRAP's submission to the EU commission was supported by London-based law firm SJ Berwin.

The head of the firm's EU and Competition Department in London, Simon Holmes, said that getting the scheme approved is a "significant achievement".

"It is particularly rewarding to have been able to make our own small contribution towards increasing the rate of recycling in the UK," he said.

WRAP recently had its budget cut by 28 per cent, as part of the government's austerity drive.
