Cold bulk storage across the agricultural industry may need to be refined if growers continue to face the threat of low temperatures damaging crops.
UK growers continue to face dramatic changes in weather – with longer, colder winters and hotter summers taking its toll on crops.
Speaking to Horticulture Week, Hammond Produce crop-production director Phillip Lilley explained how troublesome the recent cold snaps had proved.
He told the publication: "Low temperatures mean we have to look at storage systems, which are not always seen as cost effective.
"But if these conditions become more prevalent we must find ways of supplying what the customer wants. Growers may look at refining cold storage this year."
By comparison, global production is expected to improve returns across the grain industry, with growers and processors looking forward to higher demand and prices in 2011.
The latest figures from the International Grains Council suggested that wheat production alone will rise by around three per cent, to around 670 million tons.
