The plastics recycling sector could see a boost in the amount of flexible packaging they process, as stringent standards governing recycling are introduced.

Legislation requiring food manufacturers and retailers to recycle more waste and reduce their contribution to landfill is causing a shift towards more flexible plastics, according to a new Business Insights report.

Recycling companies could see this trend reflected along their chain conveyors, with flexible packaging preferred throughout the industry as it is often completely biodegradable or recyclable.

The report stated: "Technological advancements have helped packaging manufacturers to extend the use of plastic to sensitive food and drinks categories such as alcoholic drinks which could not be catered to earlier, due to low barrier properties of the material."

Many plastics industry firms are keenly anticipating the outcome of new research, which could revolutionise the food packaging industry.

The industry could soon be required to deal with a new form of smart packaging, featuring a coating of silver nanoparticles, intended to fight the bacteria that causes spoilage.
