Animal feed manufacturers are set to be subject to stricter regulation from Europe in the coming months.

According to Farmers Weekly, the EU wants to impose stricter rules on animal feed ingredients after the recent contamination of the food chain in Germany.

Last month, food had to be recalled from across Europe after it was discovered that an ingredients distributer had sold dioxin-contaminated fat to animal feed manufacturers.

Now the EU is to impose stricter rules to reduce the chance of a similar incident occurring in future.

The publication claims that the new draft measures to be announced by EU health commissioner John Dalli will include an approval system for fat and feed manufacturers, more monitoring and testing in fat production plants, and tighter separation of fats for industrial and feed use.

German authorities responded to the dioxin scare by announcing that firms in the country would be barred from using the same plant to make nutritional and industrial fats.
