Maximising the nutritional value of animal feed can help agricultural commodity companies increase production levels by 30 per cent, new research shows.
The study was conducted by a cooperation of major universities on both side of the Atlantic and has been published at the Global Dairy Feed Efficiency and Food Sustainability Summit, MeatInfo.co.uk reports.
Academics proved that by improving feed conversion efficiency, less feed will be required to achieve the same productions results.
Professor Robert Jolly of the department of economics at Iowa State University said that this research will have a major impact on the future of the agricultural sector.
He told the publication: "Increased feed efficiency would also significantly reduce the environmental impact of dairy production through better land use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions."
Farmers Weekly revealed this week that the EU is planning stricter legislation governing animal feed, following the contamination of the food chain in Germany with dioxins from industrial fat.
