The UK baking industry is currently undergoing an upturn in fortunes, thanks in part to some high-profile television shows.

According to data from British Baker, the number of bakery outlets in the UK increased by 6.9 per cent in the last 12 months.

In addition, it was revealed that the number of craft bakeries had risen by 4.7 per cent during the same period.

Mike Holling, chairman of the National Association of Master Bakeries, said the figures were fantastic news for all outlets and suppliers in the baking industry, which has benefitted from an increase in public profile.

He told the publication: "Programmes like the Great British Bake-off and The Apprentice have helped raise the profile of high street bakers.

"Craft bakeries are finally getting the attention they deserve."

This is timely news for the baking industry, which is currently facing financial pressure from the rising cost of wheat and other vital commodities.
