Waste campaigners and trade associations are in talks to revive a lobby group that will represent the sector's interest in Europe.
According to LetsRecycle.com, the interested parties have held informal talks over bringing the European Recycling Coalition, which has seen its influence minimised in recent years, up to date.
Doing so would give the recycling sector a powerful ally in Brussels, helping to ensure that EU policy helps the sector to grow and flourish.
Michael Warhurst, waste campaigner at Friends of the Earth, told the website that the early discussions concerned finding some common ground for the group to work from.
"This was a very initial stage in the meeting with discussions about the idea of trying to make sure that the recycling industry has a stronger, more coordinated voice in European debate," he said.
The EU Commission recently praised the efforts made by the UK to dramatically increase the amount of waste that is reused since 2000.
