Edinburgh City Council has expanded the range of material it will be collecting from residents for recycling.

Batteries and plastic bottles can now be added to the list of materials that are suitable for kerbside collection, it has been announced.

The council committed to the move after taking feedback from the city's residents, with many members of the public having enquired about the authority's plastics recycling policy.

Edinburgh City Council local environment spokesman Robert Aldridge said that the authority had recognised the need to step up its recycling programme.

"It is important as a city that we lower the amount of rubbish sent to landfill and the introduction of these new services will make it easier for residents to recycle even more materials," he said.

Around 275,000 tonnes of plastic are used each year in the UK, equating to approximately 15 million bottles per day, a recent YouGov poll showed.
