The government's plans to sell of much the UK's forests and woodland could have a serious impact on the biomass industry, it is claimed.
James Murray, editor of Business Green, believes that Britain has to embark and huge programme of afforestation that will provide biomass plants, which will be key to any renewal energy plan, with fuel.
However, Mr Murray feels that the government's proposals for moving forests and woodland to private ownership make no mention of how future expansion of these areas will be undertaken.
"We are already in the process of building biomass power plants and, given that it takes decades for a commercial forest to start delivering regular supplies of timber, we should be taking urgent action now to expand our supplies," he said.
Edinburgh City Council is still considering proposals to construct a biomass plant in Leith that will provide the city with half of its electricity needs.
