The UK recycling industry is thriving, with a massive increase in the amount of waste being reused, a new study shows.
According to figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, 40.1 per cent of all Britain's household waste was recycled between July 2009 and June 2010.
This figure has increased from the 39.7 per cent recorded in the 2009-2010 financial year.
Reacting to the figures, Friends of the Earth waste campaigner Beck Slater hailed the "spectacular growth" in the recycling sector, but added that there is still more that can be done.
"The government should make more recycling possible in our homes and workplaces, and aim to halve the rubbish that has to go into our black bin bags by 2020," she said.
It was recently revealed that recycling organisations and waste campaigners from across Europe are looking to form a lobby group to encourage policy makers to support recycling programmes.
