New research suggests that local councils should be sorting more recycling collections at kerbside to save money.

The Welsh Assembly Government assessed the impact of the different types of recycling processing, to consider how the different sorting techniques can help councils to make the most of their resources, Lets Recycle.com reports.

It was discovered that by sorting the items at kerbside, local authorities would be able to make more collections and increase the amount of material going to be reused in manufacturing plants.

Welsh environment minister Jane Davidson told the website that this sort of study is essential for formulating the right economic plan for waste recycling in future.

"Its findings will inform the Municipal Sector Plan, and I hope that local authorities will also use them to develop the sort of recycling services which work best for them," she said.

According to the latest data from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Britain is now recycling 40.1 per cent of its household waste.
