Seed oil extraction firms can expect supply of oilseed rape to remain healthy in 2011, according to an agricultural expert.

Speaking to Farmers Guardian, David Eudall said that rising prices for oilseed rape means that it is no longer considered simply a break crop by growers.

The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board market analyst suggests that oilseed rape is now fighting for growing space with staples such as wheat, with the former often offering better grow margins.

This trend has been further driven by better oil content bonuses.

Mr Eudall told the publication: "Prices and bonuses are at levels we haven’t seen before.

"They are profitable prices to be locking into and creating some security for the business."

Agricultural research consultant Sarah Cook recently urged oilseed rape growers to reduce the number of herbicides used in production, claiming that the amount of such chemicals that are reaching British waterways is "unacceptable".
