The government must invest more money in the recycling industry for it truly realise its potential, according to one expert.

Data from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs recently revealed that Brits now recycle 40.1 per cent of household waste.

This means that the UK has doubled the amount of waste it recycles each year in the last decade.

However, Sam Jarvis, head of communications at Waste Watch, believes that this figure could easily reach per cent if infrastructure in the UK recycling industry was modernised.

To achieve this, he wants local councils to place more emphasis on recycling programmes, while central government must also provide their backing with extra funding.

He said: "We probably can recycle around 60 per cent of our household waste.

"We'd like to see more local authorities allowing residents to recycle more items, and for there to also be greater consistency across local authorities."
