Oxfordshire residents are sending more waste to recycling firms than anyone else in the country, it has been claimed.

According to the Oxfordshire Waste Partnership (OWP), people in the county recycle more than half their waste, while the country as a whole only recycle around 40 per cent.

In addition, people from Oxfordshire sent just 329 kilos of refuse per person to landfill each year, the Oxford Mail reports.

OWP co-ordinator Wayne Lewis believes residents of the region should be very proud of their achievement.

He told the publication: "Not only are we recycling so much in Oxfordshire, we're performing well above the average.

"The public have really embraced the new recycling schemes over the past two years."

Sam Jarvis, head of communications at Waste Watch, recently suggested that Britain's recycling performance, while improving, could be better still if the government committed some investment to facilities across the UK.
