h brewing industry appears to be in fine health, after UK brewers secured a string of wins at an awards event.
British beers took 40 of the 86 medals on offer at the Brewing Industry International Awards (BIIA) in Burton-on-Trent, the Morning Advertiser reports.
In addition to the high quality of beers on offer, judges' chairman Bill Taylor said that the organisers had been amazed simply by the number of entrants for the BIIA, far outstripping demand for places in last year's competition.
He told the publication: "It has been a delight to stage the brewing awards back in Burton.
"Judges from around the world freely gave of their time and expertise and a raft of other industry organisations helped us."
The brewing industry received more good news last week, after the European Commission announced that it will be suspending import duty on key raw materials wheat and barley, in a bid to ease financial pressure on those in the sector.
