The wheat industry could be set for supply shortages, after China's Ministry of Agriculture warned that a drought in the northeast looks likely to continue.
Crops in the Shandong province, which is the country's second largest grower, are only expected to escape significant damage if rainfall replenishes moisture to the arable land.
Irrigation before winter across most crops has so far prevented the ongoing drought from causing damage to most crops, but the world's biggest producer of wheat is becoming more concerned as conditions look set to persist.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Shandong drought relief office director Yin Changwen said: "If the plants get watered after awaking from hibernation and start greening, production won't face any problems."
Rising costs of wheat have already begun to hit animal feed manufacturers in the UK.
An article published in the Guardian earlier this week suggested that British pig farmers are being forced to pass this extra expense onto consumers.
