crop growing monitor farms have been established by the Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) for a new three-year project.

The project is expected to serve as a practical way to show how on-farm financial and growing performance can be improved.

Farms belonging to Andrew and George Booth, Aberdeenshire, and Alistair Hodge, Whitsome East Newton, have been selected for the initiative and will have an attached community group to act as a forum to discuss ways to improve performance.

The project is a way for farmers to enhance their businesses "within a community context of shared agronomic and economic challenges", according to HGCA supply chain manager Steve Barras.

He added: "We are pleased to announce the start of the new Arable Monitor Farm projects and look forward to working with the host farmers, facilitators and community groups."

The HGCA has been running a series of Malting Barley Breakfasts throughout February in a bid to increase the number of British farmers growing the crop.
