The UK's energy-from-waste recycling sector could serve as a model for other countries with a high population density, it has been claimed.
Speaking to North East Business, Solvert UK's Kris Wadrop indicated that the success of the Teeside plant, which opened in 2009, could easily be replicated overseas.
He told the website: "We have to have plan two in place if Teesside fails.
"It's not deflecting our attention away from Teesside but we have to have back-ups or we become a one-trick pony."
The Teeside Valley site has processed over 2.7 million tonnes of waste since it opened, and has produced an average of 30 megawatts of electricity per hour.
Following on from the success of this project, SITA UK has since submitted a planning application to build a new energy-from-waste plant in Suffolk.
The proposals include details of environmental benefits of building the plant, including reducing carbon dioxide emissions by equivalent to 75,000 tonnes each year.
Typical Guttridge equipment used in the waste recycling industry includes; Conveyors – screw conveyors – chain conveyors – belt conveyors
