ces could return to normal within two years, especially if Russia's crop yields over the coming months are better than in 2010.

Industry analyst Dave Norris told delegates at an event in Perth that volatility across the futures and trading markets has contributed to the current wave of high prices, according to the Scotsman.

However, he suggested that if the wheat price falls back to £100 per tonne over the next two years, it should not come as a surprise.

This will no doubt buoy the hopes of many growers and processors, concerned that any sustained price increase could jeopardise their own survival during the current period of economic uncertainty.

Earlier this month, the European Commission suspended import duties for wheat and barley.

Commenting on the decision last week, European commissioner for agriculture and rural development Davian Ciolos explained: "I hope this proposal will reduce tensions on the European cereals market.

"While prices remain high on world and EU markets we have an obligation to do what we can to help ease the situation until the end of the marketing year."
