US scientists have successfully created environmental conditions to mimic those expected to prevail in around 40 years' time, as climate change progresses.
The US Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service carried out the experiment, in the hope of using the data to help farmers prepare for a warmer future.
Heaters were used to create artificial temperatures across experimental wheat fields throughout the growing season, with canopy conditions carefully measured and controlled.
Researchers were satisfied with the results, which tallied with their initial forecasts. Heaters contributed to accelerated growth, increased soil temperatures and reduced moisture.
Interestingly, the increased heat had only a nominal effect on photosynthesis. However, there was some affect on crop yields, although this tended to be determined by the period in which they were planted.
Heat applied to the wheat planted in mid-winter grew faster, while heat applied to wheat planted in September allowed it to better survive the frosts.
