Local beer brewers in the UK continue to defy the downturn, as production of cask beer has increased in the face of industry-wide declines.
Volumes for independent brewers grew by nine per cent in 2010, according to the Local Brewing Industry Report 2011 published by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA).
SIBA members alone produced around 2,500 cask beer brands this year, which more than an 800 per cent increase compared to 1976.
Commenting on the improving fortunes of independent brewers, SIBA chief executive Julian Grocock said: "Local brewers are just the kind of business this government has been saying it wants to see succeed.
"They create jobs for local people, contribute to the local and wider British economy by using home-grown ingredients such as barley, and have impeccable environmental credentials."
UK farmers and crop processors were recently urged to remain optimistic with regards to diversified crop growth in the future by Gleadell Agriculture, despite the growing appeal of the bio-ethanol market.
