New export markets have been opened up over the last season, which has helped to add value to wheat crops farmed and processed in the UK, according Gleadell Agriculture.

The UK grain trading firm has been targeting with new export partners such as Tunisia, with the highest quality wheat coming from Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and the East Midlands owing to favourable weather in 2010.

However, the company's managing director, David Sheppard, believes farmers need to keep their options open while markets remain volatile.

"Export markets are good news for growers today as we have paid very worthwhile premiums ranging from £3 to £25 for various different grades of wheat this season," he added.

The bio-ethanol sector is becoming an increasingly large part of the UK market, particularly for wheat market, the crop size of which was recently increased to 15 million tonnes for 2010 by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
