The UK government is keen to avoid imposing further regulations on the farming industry to boost food production and better environmental practices.

In an open letter to the agricultural industry, minister for agriculture Jim Paice explained that he is keen for the Campaign for the Farmed Environment to achieve success in absence of top-down dictates.

However, he warned that action would be taken if the sector could not make progress towards adjusting to food and environmental priorities on its own.

He wrote: "We want the campaign to be a success and don’t believe that we should regulate and impose more red tape.

"But if the farming community cannot step up and achieve these results voluntarily the government will have to consider a compulsory approach to deliver these same benefits."

Crop growers and animal feed processors are likely to be more concerned about high cereal prices, which are putting pressure on the global food production supply chain.

Last month, the European Commission suspended import duties on wheat and barley in a bid to reduce tensions across the European cereals market.
