A new plastics recycling plant capable of processing up to 40,000 tonnes of polyethylene terephthalate per year will be built in Gainsborough.

Investment in the £15 million plant has been praised by the government, which will provide a significant boost to the UK's current plastic bottle recycling capacity.

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs waste minister Lord Henley said: "This investment builds on the public's enthusiasm for recycling and will make it easier for them to buy recycled plastic products.

"It more than doubles the UK's ability to turn used drinks bottles into new ones, which reduces the carbon footprint of every bottle made, compared with using virgin material."

The Lincolnshire facility will be constructed under a ten-year partnership between Eco Plastics and Coca Cola Enterprises.

Coca Cola expects the new plant to be built by next year. The UK's plastic bottle recycling rate is somewhat poorer than a number of other developed European countries.
