Crop processors are being urged to look out for signs of yellow rust on wheat, which is causing international concern.

The problem is not thought to be severe, but there is growing concern about the resistance of emerging strains.

Concern across Europe is minimal, although Aarhus Unviersity's Dr Mogens Hovmoller explained that there are worries about the impact elsewhere.

He told Farmers Weekly: "The consequence of a new strain of rust in the developing world, where there is also less availability of fungicides, is much greater."

Meanwhile, British growers have been urged to begin their fungicide programmes early, to keep the yellow rust at bay on their farms.

Speaking to the Farmers Guardian, Harlow Agricultural Merchants' Richard Peake explained that new Succinate Dehydrogenase Inhibitor fungicide Triazoles are still undergoing trials, to see how they perform in the face of yellow rust.

"We advise our growers to start their programme early at T0 with a low rate of triazole, followed by a T1 based around a triazole + chlorothalonil, and then a robust T2 centred on epoxiconazole and pyraclostrobin," he added.
