Plastic recycling in South Gloucestershire Council has improved following the introduction of a new kerbside recycling scheme, it has been revealed.
Local authority waste collection figures published by the Bristol Evening Post reveal a drop in waste collection levels and an increase in recycling.
This has coincided with the expansion of accepted recycled materials by the council to include plastic containers.
In an interview with the newspaper about the improvements, executive councillor responsible for waste services Heather Goddard explained that she was pleased with the results, particularly the commitment to sustain collections despite extreme weather.
Kerbside residential recycling collections are becoming more widespread among UK local authorities.
Earlier this month, the London Borough of Bedford announced plans to introduce kerbside battery collection services.
Residents will be required to place used batteries in special plastic bags. Once collected, residents will receive a new empty bag.
The process is expected to improve recycling rates in the borough and reduce the number of hazardous batteries ending up in landfill.
