The European Union (EU) is right to have relaxed its rules governing the import of crops which contain genetically-modified (GM) material, according to an industry expert.
National Farmers Union director of policy Martin Haworth explained that the expanding growth of GM crops globally demands a pragmatic approach to import regulations, but conceded that more action is needed.
However, despite the relaxation of regulations – allowing up to 0.1 per cent of non-EU approved GM should be allowed in animal feed imports – a long-term solution to the issue needs to be found.
Mr Haworth noted: "As GM acreages increase globally, and new varieties come onto the market, there needs to be a pragmatic and workable system in place to deal with the traces of unintended GM material found in globally-traded bulk commodities such as soybeans and maize.
"Unless we find an effective solution to this issue we risk making the whole of the European livestock industry uncompetitive over time."
