Oil extraction from rapeseed is likely to see a sharp increase in production levels as it is revealed to offer better returns than wheat cultivation.
According to Agrimoney, sowings of rapeseed have risen to a record high, with winter plantings jumping by 11.5 per cent to 696,000 hectares.
This is compared to a rise of just 0.2 per cent in the area allocated for wheat production.
David Eudall, analyst at farmer-funded analysis group the Home Grown Cereals Authority, said the strong gross margin for rapeseed is now almost at the level seen for first milling wheat.
He went on to tell the publication that sowing levels may remain high for some time.
"If prices stay strong, farmers may be willing to accept a bit of yield loss," Mr Eudall explained.
Industry analyst Dave Norris recently suggested that the volatility in the cereals market could end in the next two years, with improved crop yields in Russia helping prices to return to normal.
