The brewing industry is to lobby the government to create a more favourable tax environment to help the sector grow.

After a decade of "unfavourable" taxation regulations, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has revealed that total UK alcohol consumption is lower than it was ten years ago.

The BBPA therefore believes that changes are required to avoid allowing the industry to slip into decline.

Brigid Simmonds, BBPA chief executive, explains that scrapping plans for further rises in beer duty in the upcoming Budget would encourage consumption of lower-strength drinks and save around 10,000 jobs.

"The government says it wants to champion pubs, and herald a great UK manufacturing revival. Our brewing industry is the perfect place to start," she added.

According to research from Oxford Economics, recently highlighted by the BBPA, the brewing industry supports some 980,000 British workers, contributing around £21 billion to the UK economy each year.
