Waste management firms in the Shropshire region are said to benefit as one local authority reveals it is making good progress with its recycling programme.

Telford and Wrekin Council has announced that it is on track to reach an ambitious target of sending 50 per cent of the region's waste to recycling centres within the next three years, ShropshireLive.com reports.

Recycling levels have been given a significant boost thanks to the authority's introduction of a food waste collection in the north of the borough.

Councillor Adrian Lawrence, cabinet member for environment and rural, said that the recycling rate in the region has gone up by nearly ten per cent since 2007.

"This is good news for the environment and even better news for the borough's finances," he added.

Meanwhile, Gloucestershire County Council recently announced that it hopes to be sending all of its annual waste to recycling centres by the year 2050.
