The rising cost of animal feed is putting too much pressure on the British meat manufacturers, it is claimed.
NFU Scotland is now calling on Westminster to step in and help force supermarket to pay more for meat, reducing the strain on farmers and animal feed manufacturers, the Scotsman reports.
The union's vice-president John Picken told the publication that companies involved in the production of British meat need government help to survive.
Animal feed manufacturers have had to deal with the high price of corn and other cereals, which has reached record prices, while the sector has been squeezed by supermarkets importing cheap European meat.
A government supermarket adjudicator would help to give firms in the sector some much-needed breathing space, says Mr Picken.
The European Union recently relaxed rules governing genetically-modified crop content in animal feed, allowing cereals with traces of GM content to enter the food chain.
