There is likely to be a significant increase in the number of industrial biomass plants, anaerobic digesters and other energy-from-waste installations across the UK under the Renewable Heat Incentive tariff scheme.

Some 13,000 installations across industry and around 110,000 in the commercial and public sectors are set to built by 2020, according to estimates from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

Tariffs will be paid on eligible technologies that have been installed since July 15th 2009 for each kilowatt/hour of renewable heat that is produced.

The installation forecast is seven times greater than the number of installations anticipated for 2014.

DECC expects "the levels of support available for new entrants to the RHI scheme will decrease over time as the costs of the equipment and installation reduce through economies of scale".

For the biomass tariff, rates (calculated at pence/kWh) vary according to the level of energy produced.

By comparison, biomethane has a set tariff of 6.5 pence/kWh. All of the tariffs will apply for 20 years.
