A new government initiative could see a dramatic increase in the production of biomass fuel in the UK.

Measures set out in the Quality Protocol (QP) could see up to one million tonnes of waste mood heading to biomass plants instead of landfill, Edie.net reports.

The QP is part of a wider review of waste management by the Environment Agency and the Waste and Resources Action Programme.

Waste previously thought to be waste will now be redirected to recycling centres to be turned into reusable material and biomass fuels.

Head of environment and business partnerships at the Environment Agency Martin Brocklehurst said that it was important to establish a clear position on wood standards.

He added: "We've based this protocol on scientific evidence that indicates this material can be safely used as a quality product.

"We see this as the first step towards ensuring far more of our waste wood is sustainably recovered."

Research from the International Institute for Environment and Development recently suggested that biomass energy will provide 30 per cent of the world's energy needs by 2050.
