Firms extracting oil from rapeseed have been warned that the cost of the crop could be set to rise significantly in the coming months.

According to Agrimoney, European rapeseed production has been hit by heavy "block frosts" in Germany and Poland.

This resulted in above-average winterkill, and with these two countries accounting for nearly 40 per cent of the EU output, rapeseed in other countries will be significantly more valuable to growers.

German-based crop merchant Toepfer International told the publication that an increasing demand for rapeseed from the biofuel industry will further impact stock levels.

"If there is also a further rise in the demand for rapeseed for biodiesel production, it is doubtful from the current perspective that stocks will increase significantly in 2011-12," the group said.

It was recently revealed that rapeseed sowing in the UK soared over winter as the profitability of the crop increased in the colder months.
