The brewing industry could be set for some good news in chancellor George Osborne's Budget today.

Bury MP David Ruffley believes that action will be taken on beer taxation as the government, and David Cameron in particular, want to stop supermarkets selling alcohol so cheaply, the Bury Free Press Reports.

However, Mr Ruffley insists that the importance of the brewing industry is recognised by the coalition and action against supermarket prices will prevent the big stores from undermining the pub trade.

"There's going to be tax and price control so the supermarkets can't sell alcohol cheaply but I'm not expecting there will be a big increase in the price of the average pint you buy in the pub," he said.

The independent brewing industry does appear to be going through a period of growth at the moment.

Data from the Society of Independent Brewers recently revealed that demand has risen by nine per cent in the last 12 months.
