A new certification standard is to be introduced to ensure biofuel production remains sustainable.

The primary objective of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) Certification System is to ensure that biofuel coming from emerging markets is not harming food production by taking up too much of the available agricultural land.

However, it is hoped that the new certification will become an industry standard, ensuring that biofuels manufacturers holding accreditation are EU compliant.

Juan Marco Alvarez, director of the Economy and Environmental Governance group at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, said that the RSB standard will make it easier for all biofuels manufacturers to remain compliant.

"We are delighted to provide biofuel operators with a truly comprehensive standard and a broad range of online tools to help streamline the compliance process from crop to tank," he said.

UK energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne recently claimed that advancements in technology are paving the way for greater biofuel use in the defence industry.
