The EU's environment committee has called for a biowaste directive with mandatory targets, which would provide a real boost for waste management firms.
Current directives stipulate that by 2016 the amount of landfilling across the continent should be no more than 35 per cent of 1995 levels.
Speaking to a workshop run by waste management trade association FEAD in Prague, an EU official said that some countries were in real danger of failing to achieve these goals, although they were not named.
However, the EU is now keen to phase out use of landfill and plans to issue a new directive with the ambitious proposals.
