d manufacturers can expect the debate over the use of genetically-modified (GM) cereals in their produce to run and run.
The European Union (EU) is currently proposing that an existing blanket ban in the use of GM materials to feed animals be repealed.
It is thought that member states will be able to decide for themselves whether or not to allow plantings, but one British MP insists much more research needs to be one on the subject.
Michael Meacher MP told FoodManufacture.co.uk that he is not saying the GM crops will definitely have a detrimental effect on the food chain, but simply that the possibility has not really been looked at.
GM crops have been grown in America for some time, and Mr Meacher wants proper studies on the health implications of GM crops to be conducted.
"The way it's going it does seem inevitable, but we should take measures, including a moratorium [via the EU] on GM until adequate and thorough experiments are undertaken," he said.
