A European MP from Hampshire is to launch an investigation into plans to build a biomass plant in Southampton.
Green MEP Keith Taylor wants to establish whether biomass can really be classed as green fuel under European law, the Southern Daily Echo reports.
Mr Taylor will look at whether the expected output from the plant will breach EU air pollution regulations, which could have far-reaching implications for the biomass industry.
However, a spokesman for the company responsible for the proposed plant, Helius, told the publication that detailed assessments of the facility's impact on air quality have already been carried out.
"Its modelling work will be subject to independent assessment by the Environment Agency and Southampton City Council as part of the consenting process," he added.
More positive news for the biomass industry came last week, when it was announced that the Environment Agency in Wales had approved plans for a new plant in Port Talbot.
Typical Guttridge equipment used in the biomass industry includes:
Conveyors – screw conveyors – chain conveyors – belt conveyors
