Waste management firms in Wales have been boosted by the news that a pioneering recycling scheme has been granted further funding.

The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) will support the Presteigne and Norton Zero Waste initiative for another year after promising initial results, the Hereford Times reports.

Targets for 2025 have almost been reached already and project manager Dave Clark says that this is down to the co-operation and goodwill shown by local residents.

"We've already achieved a recycling rate of 67 per cent, which means only a third of community waste now goes to landfill compared to an average of 55 per cent in Wales, but there's lots of scope to reduce this further," he told the publication.

The WAG recently revealed that it plans to have 75 per cent of its waste materials going to recycling centres by 2025.

Ministers believe that these ambitious plans will make the country a "world leader" in waste management.
