The Packaging and Films Association (Pafa) has backed the new initiative to collect plastic films for recycling at high street stores.

Led by the British Retail Consortium, the scheme will see retailers such as Asda, The Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco set bins aside at their outlets for the collection of clean plastic films and carrier bags, Plastics and Rubber Weekly notes.

Pafa chief executive Barry Turner says that the initiative will allow manufacturers to continue using packaging to prevent food waste without placing strain on landfill sites.

He told the publication: "In spite of the fact that local authorities are reluctant to collect thin packaging films from households or at the kerbside, this retailer initiative now means that the opportunity to recover the value from lightweight protective plastic film is within everyone's reach."

This follows news that the trade association for European plastics recyclers, EuPR, has created a working group in a bid to improve the reputation of mixed plastics.
