Firms involved in rapeseed milling could soon find a major new sales market in the animal feed sector.

The latest research from Reading University finds that feeding rapeseed to cows can actually lead to the production of healthier milk, Farmers Guardian reports.

Professor Kirsty Kliem and her team fed the crop to lactating cows and found a significant reduction in the amount of saturated fat in the milk.

In addition, it was discovered that over time, the rapeseed diet continue to drive down the milk's saturated fat levels.

Dr Kliem told the publication that the results were "very exciting", because as well as reducing harmful fats, rapeseed feed can increase the amount of beneficial fats in cow's milk.

A recent study published by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs found that switching to a rapeseed diet can reduce cows' greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20 per cent.
