Campaigners across Merseyside are pushing local residents to reduce the amount of food waste that is sent to landfill.
According to the Southport Visitor, a survey shows that around 2,000 tonnes of food waste is being sent to landfill on Merseyside every week, when much of it can be used to generate energy.
The Love Food, Hate Waste campaign is looking to change that, and it claims that that it has already reduced the "food waste mountain" by 32,000 tonnes each year.
Councillor Kevin Cluskey, chair of the Waste Authority in the region, said the scheme has really helped to raise awareness of just how much food is being thrown away.
"This training helps local people to continue to get the message out, so the work that has already taken place won’t be forgotten," he said.
Cheltenham Borough Council has recently been celebrating the success of its food waste recycling scheme, having kept 23 tonnes of food waste out of landfill in the first two days of operation.
