Firms working in rapeseed oil extraction may find that the cost of the commodity could rise in the next few months.

One of Europe's biggest rapeseed producers, the Ukraine, is having to re-seed a large part of its winter crop after extremely cold weather, Bloomberg report

The country's Agriculture minister has called for between ten and 12 per cent of the winter rapeseed crop to be re-seeded.

Oleksandr Demydov, head of the ministry's agriculture-markets department, told the news provider that the estimated amount of rapeseed lost to the frost "increases each day", which will reduce supply in the sector and potentially raise prices.

Kiev-based consultancy UkrAgroConsult explained to Bloomberg that even well-developed crops had damage rates of between 30 and 50 per cent during the cold spell.

Pressure on rapeseed supply could be further increased by demand from the food industry.

Fast-food outlet Kentucky Fried Chicken recently revealed it has switched from using palm oil to rapeseed oil at all of its 800 UK outlets.
