Pesticide resistance could soon serve as grounds for British authorities restricting or banning the cultivation of European Union (EU) approved genetically modified crops.

The Environment Committee voted in favour of a change to European Commission proposals that will allow for the ban of crops to safeguard the environment.

In addition to pesticide resistance, examples of reasons for banning crops include contamination and other socioeconomic impacts.

Following the vote, committee rapporteur Corinne Lepage explained: "The EU authorisation system should be maintained but it should be acknowledged that some agricultural and environmental impacts, as well as socio-economic impacts linked to contamination, can be cited by member states to justify a ban or restriction."

There is growing evidence that the UK may be more suitable for the cultivation of short-rotation energy crops than previously thought.

Speaking to The Engineer earlier this month, Southampton University professor of plant biology Gail Taylor suggested that the crops can be grown sustainably in parts of England.
