Plastics recycling firms in Wiltshire will be disappointed to find out that the local council has scrapped plans to introduce a county-wide collection programme.
A trial of kerbside plastic collection was carried out between September 2010 and January this year, collecting 46 tonnes of waste in Trowbridge, the Wiltshire Times reports.
However, Wiltshire County Council has decided that the plans are not cost effective for the region as a whole, and so the project will not go ahead.
Cabinet member for waste Toby Sturgis said the council is still striving to reduce carbon emissions, but blamed the local plastics waste processors for not making the process affordable.
"This country is several years behind the rest of Europe in having processors who will separate rigid plastics from normal plastics like food packaging, and recycle them," he said.
Last week, the British Plastics Federation's Recycling Group claimed that the UK is facing a shortage of useable material.
