Firms specialising in generating energy from food waste may face a smaller supply of usable material if proposed changes to food labelling go ahead.

The government is planning to cut the amount of food that is wasted by removing the "best before" date from foodstuffs.

It is argued that the best before date merely advises customers when a product may no longer be at its best, although it remains perfectly edible.

However, customers often unnecessarily throw away products that have passed beyond this date.

"Staples like mushrooms and tomatoes are routinely marked 'best before' when all that happens when they reach these dates is that the food loses a bit of colour or goes a bit soft," a 'collation source' told the Daily Mail.

"We cannot carry on throwing away tons of food like this."

New Jersey firm Green Waste Technologies recently revealed it has developed a technique that can turn food waste into oil and animal feed.
