Biomass crops could be responsible for four per cent of the UK's energy production by the year 2020, according to new research.
A study by the UK Energy Research Centre (UK ERC) finds that planting biomass crops such as willow and poplar on unused land can play a significant role in meeting the government's target of generating 15 per cent of the country's energy requirements from renewable sources by this date.
Growing biomass crops in this way will help Britain increase its renewable energy production without disrupting food production or having a major impact on the state of the environment, according to the UK ERC.
Research conducted by the VTT Technical Research Institute in Finland recently revealed that Europe has a biomass potential that is 50 per cent higher than is currently being exploited.
It noted that there is enough wood available to produce the same amount of energy as 157 million tonnes of oil every year.
Typical Guttridge equipment used in the biomass industry includes:
Conveyors – screw conveyors – chain conveyors – belt conveyors
