Crops for use in the manufacture of biofuels will soon be growing on former landfill sites.

The Waste Recycling Group (WRG) is looking to regenerate disused land formerly used to bury household waste, according to Edie.net.

WRG has been planting a combination of miscanthus grass and short rotation coppice at 14 sites in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Humberside and Yorkshire, it reports.

The scheme has now received grant funding from Natural England and the next growing season will see a further 100 hectares planted.

"This is a very exciting development for the company and builds on our track record of sustainable reclamation, recycling and regeneration," WRG senior restoration and energy crop manager Mark Pailing told the website.

A US Department of Agriculture report recently revealed that Europe's rapeseed output is expected to rise by 160,000 tonnes this year, with 63 per cent of the total harvest being used for the production of biofuel.
