Increased recycling rates have helped Exeter City Council achieve record profits from their waste management sector.

According to the Express and Echo, a total of £1.42 million has been made from recycling in the Devon City, driven by the fact that 37 per cent of waste material now goes to recycling firms.

This means in turn that the mount of waste material sent to landfill dropped by 1,263 tonnes in the last 12 months.

Mike Trim, the head of the city's cleansing services, explained that the authority has sold £834,000 worth of recycled items, while gaining £586,000 in credits.

However, he told the publication that the council will continue to push recycling: "We know that there is more recycling that could be done across the city.

"If we could convince people to recycle more we could put another £200,000 in the city's pot."

The mayor's office of Hartlepool recently claimed that the local council's decision to switch to fortnightly bin collections has encouraged more people in the town to recycle.
